Ethiopia is currently facing a significant geological crisis, having experienced a record-breaking series of 10 earthquakes within a mere 24-hour period this week. The tremors, which have raised alarms among scientists and residents alike, were documented by the US Geological Survey as occurring in the vicinity of the Fentale volcano in the Awash region of the Rift Valley. The tremors ranged from 4.3 to 5.1 in magnitude, with the most powerful quake striking at approximately 1:20 AM on December 30. Tom Pfeiffer, a volcanologist from Volcano Discovery, noted a concerning uptick in seismic activity in the Awash area, warning that the likelihood of a volcanic eruption is now greater due to a probable shallow magma intrusion. This geological instability has not only instilled fear within local communities but has also raised urgent questions regarding the potential for further natural disasters. Local authorities, such as Adem Bahi, the district administrator for Awash Fentale, have reported that the earthquakes have forced thousands to evacuate their homes, with urgent needs for shelter, food, and other essentials. The seismic events have devastated infrastructure, with more than 100 houses reportedly damaged and a notable displacement of over 2,560 residents, alongside the loss of livestock. Experts like Prof. Atalay Ayele, director of the Institute of Geophysics, Space Science and Astronomy at Addis Ababa University, have highlighted that the previously quiet region has now shown alarming seismic intensity, increasing concerns over public safety. The area has experienced several significant quakes over the previous months, including a 4.7-magnitude quake on December 14 and a 5.3-magnitude event on November 26, each causing extensive damage and resulting in forced evacuations. Geologically, this series of tremors stems from the tectonic movements within the East African Rift Valley—a region notorious for its geological instability. Mount Fentale, a dormant volcano, lies at the heart of these activities; it last erupted in 1820, and its reawakening is being closely monitored by scientists. Dr. Meseret Getachew, a seismologist at Addis Ababa University, has underscored the urgency of the situation, warning that continued seismic activity could severely impact essential infrastructure, including roads, dams, and energy facilities. Furthermore, the quakes pose a threat to natural and cultural heritage sites, such as the Awash National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, jeopardizing its biodiversity and tourism potential. In light of these troubling developments, seismologists and disaster response experts are imploring the Ethiopian government to take decisive action. Dr. Yonas Workineh, a disaster relief specialist, emphasized the need for improved monitoring capabilities, public education campaigns, and robust disaster preparedness plans to mitigate the risks posed by these earthquakes. “The magnitude and frequency of these earthquakes require a coordinated response,” he stated, advocating for international support to aid in recovery and preparedness efforts. As Ethiopia navigates this precarious situation, the resilience of its communities and the response of its government will be crucial in facing the challenges posed by these geological upheavals.
