A state of emergency has been declared in Vanuatu following a devastating 7.3-magnitude earthquake that struck off the shores of the South Pacific archipelago on Tuesday, December 17. The earthquake has left the capital city of Port Vila in ruins, prompting immediate response efforts from local authorities and international aid organizations. Witnesses have described harrowing scenes in the aftermath of the quake. Milroy Cainton, a local resident, captured footage revealing significant damage throughout Port Vila, including a collapsed building on Route to Mele. Cainton reported that the structure fell onto staff members working in a nearby shop, trapping them beneath the debris. As of Wednesday morning, recovery efforts have been severely hampered due to difficult access to the site and a lack of specialized equipment and personnel, leaving families desperate for news of their loved ones. Tragically, the National Disaster Management Office confirmed that at least 14 individuals have lost their lives as a result of the earthquake, with over 200 more receiving treatment for various injuries. Among the casualties, a woman was reportedly found deceased by her family after a massive water tank, holding 3,000 liters of water, collapsed on her. This particular incident highlights the grave dangers that residents faced during the quake. In response to the escalating situation, authorities have declared a seven-day state of emergency, which includes a curfew set from 6 PM to 6 AM. This measure is intended to maintain order and facilitate relief efforts as the community grapples with the aftermath of the disaster. As recovery teams mobilize and aid begins to flow into the region, the focus now turns to ensuring the safety and well-being of those affected. The coming days will be critical in determining the extent of the damage and the necessary support required to assist the residents of Port Vila in rebuilding their lives after this catastrophic event.
