In a troubling development, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a series of seismic activities at Kanlaon Volcano, situated on Negros Island. Within a mere 24-hour period, the volcano experienced 14 volcanic earthquakes, raising alarms and drawing significant attention from both local authorities and residents. According to PHIVOLCS' latest bulletin, the situation at Kanlaon has escalated, particularly following its recent explosive eruption on December 9. The agency has confirmed that the volcano emitted a staggering 3,620 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Saturday, December 14, and further observed a moderate 50-meter plume of volcanic gas drifting west-southwest. Continuous degassing has also been noted, indicating ongoing volcanic activity. As a result of these developments, PHIVOLCS has elevated the alert status to Level 3, which signifies an intensified state of magmatic unrest. In light of these conditions, the agency has urged residents living within a six-kilometer radius from the volcano’s summit to evacuate immediately. The recommendation comes amid fears of potential hazards that could arise, including a sudden explosive eruption, lava flows, ashfall, pyroclastic density currents, rockfalls, and lahars in the event of heavy rainfall. President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has reassured the public of the government's proactive response to the situation. He has directed the Department of Budget and Management to release disaster funds aimed at facilitating necessary evacuations and other emergency measures. The Department of Health (DOH) is also on high alert, monitoring health conditions in the area and preparing to address any potential eruption-related diseases that may arise. In addition to these governmental initiatives, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Negros Island have heightened their alert levels. Their readiness underscores the seriousness of the situation and the need for immediate response capabilities. As the Kanlaon Volcano continues to show signs of unrest, the community remains on edge, watching for further developments. The combination of seismic activity, gas emissions, and government response serves as a reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature. Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and prioritize their safety as the situation unfolds.
