In a significant blow to the state's privacy and security, Rhode Island has confirmed that approximately 650,000 residents have been affected by a cyberattack targeting its online benefits system. During a press conference on Monday, Governor Dan McKee, alongside HealthSource RI Director Lindsay Lang, detailed the breach that compromised the data of individuals reliant on various health and human service programs. The attack, which led to the shutdown of the RIBridges system two weeks ago, was prompted by a warning from the state’s vendor, Deloitte, regarding a serious security threat. Governor McKee revealed that the perpetrators were demanding a ransom, although they did not disclose specific details about the demands or the nature of the leaked data. The breach has the potential to impact anyone who has participated in essential state programs, including Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Childcare Assistance Program, Rhode Island Works, Long-term Services and Supports, and health insurance obtained through HealthSource RI. This wide-reaching impact has raised concerns among state officials about the vulnerability of sensitive personal information. To mitigate the fallout from this breach, impacted residents can expect letters arriving by January that will outline the steps to access free credit monitoring services. This initiative aims to help those affected safeguard their financial information and monitor for any signs of identity theft or fraud. In the wake of the incident, the state has engaged Experian to manage a toll-free hotline, providing critical information and support to residents concerned about the breach. The call center is available for inquiries Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on weekends from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., although it will be closed on major holidays. As Rhode Island grapples with the implications of this cyber breach, state officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting their personal information. The situation underscores the increasing threats posed by cybercriminals and the importance of robust security measures in safeguarding public data. Residents are encouraged to utilize available resources and stay informed as more details emerge regarding the breach and the steps necessary to protect their identities.
