As the new year dawns, the Elkhart County Historical Museum is offering a unique opportunity for locals to delve into the history of fitness while also getting a bit of exercise themselves. On January 10, 2025, from 11 a.m. to noon, the museum will host a program titled “Learn & Burn,” aimed at adults aged 18 and over. This engaging event will not only provide insights into the evolution of personal fitness and the emergence of physical culture during the late 19th century, but it will also include a workout session inspired by historical fitness routines from that era. Participants will first engage their minds with a discussion about how fitness practices have changed over the years, gaining perspectives on what motivated individuals to embrace physical culture in the 1800s. Following this intellectual warm-up, attendees will have the chance to join Barb Welty from the Elkhart County Health Department for a hands-on workout that incorporates the fitness techniques and exercises popularized during the turn of the century. There's no fee for the event, and registration is not required; however, participants must sign a waiver upon arrival. The Elkhart County Historical Museum is conveniently located at 304 W. Vistula St., making it an accessible destination for those eager to explore this intriguing blend of history and physical activity. In addition to this historical fitness event, the community is abuzz with various health and wellness activities in the coming weeks. For those looking to indulge in self-care, the St. Joseph County Public Library will host a workshop on DIY winter skin scrubs and soothers on January 14. Participants will have the chance to create their own sugar scrubs and salt bath soaks, promoting relaxation and rejuvenation as the winter chill continues. The RiverBend Cancer Services Wellness House in South Bend will offer a range of free classes for cancer patients, survivors, and their families, aimed at promoting overall wellness and community support. These classes, which include options like Gentle Yoga, Seated Strength, and more, provide vital resources for those navigating the challenges of cancer. The Buchanan Area Senior Center also continues to foster community health through a variety of fitness classes, health checks, and social events tailored to seniors, ensuring that all ages have access to wellness opportunities. With a lineup of engaging programs, from historical workouts to self-care workshops and community support classes, January is shaping up to be a month of health and enrichment in the region. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these offerings and start the year on a positive note, prioritizing both their physical health and personal growth.
