In response to a series of earthquakes that have rattled the Ilocos region since December 17, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) convened with officials from its regional offices in Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, and Central Luzon to enhance preparedness for potential seismic events. OCD Administrator Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno expressed concerns that these tremors, registering magnitudes between 1.5 and 5.0, could signal the onset of a larger earthquake, potentially surpassing the infamous "Big One" anticipated in Metro Manila. Nepomuceno highlighted that the recent seismic activity suggests movement along the Manila Trench, a tectonic boundary that could give rise to an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.2 or 8.3. Such a powerful quake could have catastrophic implications, including the risk of triggering a tsunami along the northern coast. "We must not underestimate the possibility of a significant earthquake occurring in the near future," he remarked during an interview. As the holiday season approaches, the OCD is prioritizing safety measures and public awareness campaigns. Collaborating with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and local authorities, the OCD is intensifying its efforts to ensure that communities are well-informed and prepared. During the meeting, officials discussed strategies for effective information dissemination, emphasizing the crucial role of media, digital communication, and radio in alerting the public. "We are committed to ensuring that our citizens are not only aware of the risks but also equipped with the knowledge required to respond appropriately in the event of a significant earthquake," Nepomuceno stated. While some reports indicate that the recent series of quakes has subsided, Nepomuceno cautioned that this does not eliminate the risk of a more powerful tremor in the future. "It is better to be proactive in our preparations. We must remain vigilant and ready for any developments," he advised. A key focus of the OCD's strategy is the issuance of timely warnings to the public. In the event of an impending large-scale earthquake, Nepomuceno stressed the importance of taking immediate action. "When a final warning is issued, it is imperative that individuals evacuate quickly to higher ground, rather than hesitating or waiting for further instructions," he urged. The anxiety surrounding potential earthquakes is compounded by the fact that many citizens may be preoccupied with holiday festivities. The OCD's proactive approach aims to balance the celebratory spirit of the season with a strong emphasis on safety and preparedness, ensuring that communities are not caught off guard in the face of nature’s unpredictable forces. As the region braces for the possibility of a significant seismic event, officials are urging the public to stay informed and prepared, underscoring that vigilance and readiness can save lives.
