The town of Melksham is gearing up for an exciting start to the New Year with plans for a new play park on Awdrey Avenue, thanks to funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The initiative, which emerged from suggestions made by local residents and facilitated through Wiltshire Council's Community Conversations program, aims to address the community's need for enhanced recreational facilities. Local residents played a pivotal role in shaping this project, and a panel of their peers ultimately approved the grant to bring this vision to life. The forthcoming play park promises to feature innovative designs that incorporate natural play elements, providing imaginative spaces for children aged up to 12 years. These features are intended to encourage adventurous, risk-based play while supporting children's development in a fun and inclusive environment for families. Construction is slated to begin in January 2025, with the park opening expected by April 2025. Hayley Bell, Deputy Town Clerk of Melksham Town Council, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We are excited to provide a space where children and families can come together, explore, and enjoy the outdoors in a thoughtfully designed environment.” This initiative is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing community spaces and promoting well-being for all residents. In tandem with the play park, the Melksham Town Council is also set to launch a Youth Advisory Board, accompanied by a special celebration event on Saturday, February 15, 2025. This event is designed to empower young voices aged 14 to 18, and up to 25 for those with Special Educational Needs (SEN). It promises to be a vibrant gathering featuring live performances from local bands, including The Sunnies, alongside various activities that focus on issues important to the youth. The event aims to provide young people with a platform to express their ideas and concerns, explore how they can contribute to shaping the future of Melksham, and connect with their peers as well as local leaders. Attendees will have the chance to engage in discussions, share their thoughts, and participate in interactive activities that emphasize their role in the community. Tickets for the event will be available soon, and those interested can secure their spots by visiting the Town Council office or booking online via Ticket Source, though spaces are limited. The Youth Advisory Board initiative underscores the council's dedication to fostering an inclusive environment where the energy, ideas, and enthusiasm of Melksham’s young people can flourish. Together, these initiatives signal a promising future for the town's youth and families alike.
