Odisha's 26 Villages Earn Tsunami Ready Status, Leading Coastal Safety Efforts

In a significant achievement for coastal safety, 26 villages in Odisha have received the prestigious "Tsunami Ready" recognition from the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. This recognition encompasses 24 villages from six districts, in addition to two previously acknowledged villages, highlighting the region's commitment to disaster preparedness and resilience against potential tsunami threats. This announcement was made public in a press statement dated December 21, 2024. The "Tsunami Ready" designation is contingent on meeting 12 specific indicators, which were fulfilled through a carefully executed series of initiatives designed to enhance community preparedness. Key activities included extensive training and capacity building for local residents, community awareness programs, the distribution of tsunami awareness materials, and the formulation of detailed tsunami management plans. In addition, the initiative involved conducting mock drills to test the community's readiness, identifying clear evacuation routes, and installing tsunami hoardings and signages throughout the villages. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), headquartered in Hyderabad, played a crucial role in this initiative. INCOIS operates a 24-hour tsunami monitoring and alert system that covers all aspects from risk assessment to the dissemination of timely warnings, thereby ensuring that communities are well-informed and prepared in the event of an emergency. The remarkable preparedness activities undertaken in Odisha have garnered both national and international attention, establishing the state as a leader in coastal safety measures. A notable highlight of this initiative was a live evacuation simulation conducted in Kaitha village, located in the Kendrapara district. The simulation, attended by key figures including Dr. T. Sinanivasa Kumar from UNESCO and Dr. Sunitha Jena, General Manager of OSDAMA, showcased the community's active participation in emergency preparedness. This drill involved volunteers simulating a rescue operation, which drew on the support and engagement of local residents. Local leaders and residents shared their experiences and insights regarding their journey towards preparedness, illustrating a collective commitment to ensuring the safety of their communities.
