The situation surrounding Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island has prompted authorities to consider expanding the established six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) to a 10-kilometer radius. This decision stems from growing concerns about the potential for lahars—volcanic mudflows—especially in the wake of heavy rainfall that could exacerbate volcanic activity. The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Region 6 is currently consulting with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) and the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) to monitor the ongoing situation and assess the feasibility of this proposed extension. The current PDZ has already displaced thousands of residents following an explosive eruption less than two weeks ago, making it crucial for local government units to prepare for any potential expansions of the danger zone. Should the PDZ be broadened, nine additional barangays would fall within this area, raising alarms for the local government of La Castellana, which is already grappling with limited resources to support evacuees. The municipality has been proactive, considering options such as establishing tent cities in nearby Himamaylan City to provide refuge for those affected. Phivolcs has reassured the public that these precautionary measures, while serious, do not signal an immediate disaster. The agency continues to monitor the volcano's activity closely. Their latest report indicates that Kanlaon has exhibited intensified unrest, evidenced by the recording of 22 volcanic quakes within just a 24-hour period. As the community faces uncertainty, state volcanologists have maintained that Kanlaon's activity remains under Alert Level 3, a designation indicating heightened unrest that requires vigilance from both authorities and residents alike. While local leaders work to address the logistical challenges of accommodating evacuees, the importance of preparedness in the face of natural disasters has never been more apparent. With the potential expansion of the danger zone looming, the focus remains on safeguarding lives and ensuring the community is ready for any eventualities linked to Kanlaon Volcano’s ongoing unrest.
