In a powerful demonstration of commitment to gender equality and the protection of vulnerable populations, the PureTrust Foundation recently held a forum in Tamale, Ghana, in observance of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This initiative, which spans from November 25 to December 10, aims to raise awareness and combat the pervasive issue of domestic violence affecting women and children worldwide. The event, aptly themed "Gender and Child Protection: Addressing Domestic Violence Through Positive Spousal Communication," brought together an array of participants including social welfare staff, artisans, and women smock weavers. Through collaborative discussions and educational workshops, the forum sought to empower women's groups with vital communication strategies, reinforcing the significance of maintaining healthy relationships and promoting peace within families. Central to the forum's dialogue was the urgent need for enhanced legal aid, counseling, and support services for victims of domestic violence. The speakers collectively emphasized the importance of educating communities about the rights of women and children, particularly in relation to domestic violence and child abuse. The PureTrust Foundation highlighted that these educational efforts are crucial for fostering safe environments and encouraging open discussions about preventing violence, especially in communities prone to such acts. Mad. Dakurah Severa from the Department of Social Welfare shed light on the alarming statistics surrounding divorce rates and broken homes, reinforcing that many women and children bear the brunt of these societal challenges. Her call for increased education for traditional authorities and men underscored the importance of their roles in ensuring the security and peace of women and children in their communities. Mad. Faidatu Alhassan, representing the Tamale Development Trust, echoed this sentiment by advocating for the enforcement of human rights laws that can provide a protective framework for vulnerable individuals. Meanwhile, Hajia Safia Alhassan, CEO of Pagsung Shea Cooperative, stressed the significance of effective education in combating violence and promoting peaceful coexistence within families and communities. Highlighting the foundation's dedicated approach to gender and child protection, Mad. Jamila Tahiru, Projects Coordinator at the PureTrust Foundation, noted that the event aimed to create a safe space for participants to learn, share experiences, and voice their concerns. Many of the women involved in the foundation's initiatives are young and married, and the forum offered them a platform to discuss family dynamics while gleaning valuable strategies for conflict resolution. The PureTrust Foundation’s broader mission extends beyond immediate social issues; it encompasses enhancing social and economic solutions for marginalized communities. With a focus on health, education, economic empowerment, youth development, and access to clean water and sanitation, the organization is steadfast in its commitment to collaborating with government entities and civil society. Their goal is to influence policy changes that safeguard vulnerable populations and ensure the strict enforcement of laws against violence. Through various skills training and support programs, the PureTrust Foundation stands as a beacon of hope for women apprentices, striving to uplift living conditions and educational opportunities for women and children across Ghana. As the 16 Days of Activism campaign continues, the foundation's efforts serve as a reminder of the collective responsibility to create a future free from violence, where women and children can thrive in safety and dignity.
