A small earthquake rattled the island of Maui just before 9 p.m. on Thursday, leaving residents surprised but unharmed. The U.S. Geological Service (USGS) reported that the quake registered a magnitude of 3.7, with its epicenter located approximately six miles below the surface near the isolated community of Hana on the island's east coast. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the tremor was felt widely across Maui, as well as on the Big Island and Moloka'i. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or property damage resulting from the seismic event. In a reassuring note, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory confirmed that the earthquake has not affected the nearby Mauna Loa or Kīlauea volcanoes. Mauna Loa, noted for being the largest volcano on Earth by volume, and Kīlauea, recognized as one of the most active volcanoes globally, are both under close watch by scientists. The Observatory’s monitoring is ongoing, as they keep an eye out for any changes in volcanic activity. Earthquakes are relatively uncommon on Maui, with this event attributed to shifts in the Earth's crust due to the weight of the Hawaiian islands. Such geological movements can occur without any immediate threat to the surrounding area, a fact that has been underscored by the absence of a tsunami threat associated with this particular quake. As scientists continue to observe the seismic activity, residents are reminded to stay informed and prepared, especially in a region known for its volcanic landscape. While the earthquake in Hana may be an unusual occurrence, it serves as a reminder of the dynamic forces at play beneath Hawaii's surface.
