Heavy rains overnight have led to significant surface flooding in parts of Apia, with water levels rising to nearly a meter in some areas, causing widespread disruptions for residents and commuters. The Samoa Meteorology Division issued a nationwide weather warning late Thursday, which remains in effect as of Friday morning, urging citizens to stay cautious in light of the severe conditions. As of the latest update at 5:00 a.m. on Friday, the meteorological service has warned of continued heavy downpours, resulting in poor visibility and slippery conditions on mountain roads and passes. Areas adjacent to major rivers and waterways are under particular scrutiny, with heightened risks of flooding and landslides being reported. "Heavy downpours with poor visibility, foggy and slippery roads over mountain passes and ranges, pooling near roadsides and overflowing waterways. Possible flooding and landslides for major rivers and vulnerable areas. Expect gusty wind at times," the Samoa Meteorology Division cautioned. In the Fugalei district of Apia, surface flooding has left many streets submerged, forcing pedestrians to navigate sidewalks instead of roadways and compelling some to flag down passing vehicles for transport. The flooding has created challenges for morning commutes, with many residents finding it difficult to reach their destinations. The Samoa Fire and Emergency Service Authority (FESA) reported that, as of 7:34 a.m., there were no significant rain-related emergencies; however, water levels in affected areas have led to considerable disruptions.
