Residents of Johannesburg experienced a surprising jolt on Tuesday night as an earth tremor with a preliminary magnitude of 3.1 was recorded around 20:30, with the epicentre located in Randfontein. The City of Joburg's Emergency Management Services (EMS) promptly addressed concerns, confirming that, as of now, there have been no reports of injuries or damages following the seismic event. Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the Joburg EMS, stated that while the tremor was felt widely across the city, the Council for Geoscience is still in the process of confirming the exact magnitude of the event. “The earth tremor was experienced in most parts of City of Joburg. At this stage, no injuries or damages were reported through our emergency services' call centre,” Mulaudzi assured residents, urging them to remain vigilant. The Council for Geoscience, which monitors seismic activity throughout South Africa, will provide further updates as they continue to assess the situation. In the meantime, the EMS remains on high alert, keeping a watchful eye on all seven regions of Johannesburg to respond swiftly to any emerging reports related to the tremor. This recent event adds to a series of tremors that the city has faced in recent months. Earlier this year, residents in the south of Johannesburg felt two earthquakes, the first on June 29, which registered a magnitude of approximately 2.6, and another on July 1, measured at 2.3. Both occurrences had their epicentres near Nasrec, raising ongoing concerns about seismic stability in the area. In February, a more significant quake, localized to Soweto, registered a magnitude of 3.4, further indicating that Johannesburg is not unfamiliar with seismic activities. These tremors, though not causing any injuries or severe damages, have prompted discussions about the geological stability of the region and the potential risks associated with future seismic events. As Johannesburg residents reflect on the tremor they experienced, the EMS continues to encourage safety measures and preparedness, emphasizing the importance of being aware of the steps to take during such natural events. The community remains hopeful that, with ongoing monitoring and assessments, they can continue to enjoy their vibrant city with the assurance that emergency services are on standby, ready to respond if needed.
