In a significant advancement for vulnerable populations, housing grants of up to €40,000 have been made available for individuals living with disabilities, alongside increased financial support for older citizens. This initiative marks the official launch of the Revised Housing Adaptation Grants for Older People and Disabled People Scheme, as announced by Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien and Junior Minister Alan Dillon. The most notable adjustment in the scheme is a substantial increase of €10,000 to the grant for individuals with disabilities, raising the maximum available to €40,000. Additionally, the Housing Aid for Older People Grant has seen an increase of €2,700, bringing it to a new maximum of €10,700. The Mobility Aid Grant has also been enhanced, with an additional €2,000 available, now totaling €8,000. These revisions represent over a 30% increase in grant limits, along with a 25% rise in income thresholds for eligibility. Minister O'Brien emphasized the transformative impact these grants will have on the lives of older and disabled individuals, stating, “These grants make a real and significant impact on the lives of older and disabled people.” He further committed to allocating nearly €100 million to support these grants for the coming year, ensuring that families and individuals can maintain their independence in their communities. Contributing to the efforts, Minister Dillon highlighted the important role local authorities and tradesmen will play in delivering approximately 15,000 grants throughout 2024. He reiterated the government’s commitment to enabling individuals to remain in their homes, indicating that the additional funding will empower local authorities to better serve their communities. The revised scheme officially began on December 1, 2024, and all applications submitted from this date will be evaluated under the new guidelines. Local authorities are now equipped with new application forms to facilitate the process. The Mobility Aids Grant Scheme is designed to assist with necessary home modifications to address mobility issues, covering essential works that enhance accessibility. While VAT on these works is not included in the grant, applicants can seek a VAT refund from Revenue for related equipment and installations. Similarly, the Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability is aimed at funding essential home modifications required for those with physical, sensory, or intellectual disabilities, as well as mental health challenges. This grant is pivotal for ensuring that homes are adapted to meet the specific needs of disabled residents. The Housing Aid for Older People Grant focuses on improving the living conditions of seniors, allowing them to remain in their homes for as long as possible. This grant can fund essential repairs and modifications necessary for maintaining a safe and comfortable living environment. With these significant enhancements to the housing grant schemes, the government is taking a crucial step towards ensuring that older citizens and people with disabilities can live with dignity and independence, while also supporting local economies through increased funding for home modifications and repairs.
