Plans have been submitted to expand the endoscopy department at St Helens Hospital, located on Marshalls Cross Road, in response to an increasing demand for medical services. The proposed extension, which will be situated on the first floor, aims to address the growing need for treatment spaces and support facilities within the department. Halliday Meecham Architects, representing the NHS Trust, have outlined a comprehensive design that includes not only the extension of the endoscopy area but also the addition of a new rooftop plant room. The proposals specifically detail enhancements such as increased treatment spaces, improved patient changing facilities, and additional washrooms, all designed to accommodate a surge in patients requiring endoscopic procedures. The design and access statement elaborates on the necessity for these improvements, emphasizing that the existing facilities are insufficient to meet current demand. The proposed extension will feature a state-of-the-art recovery suite designed with separate male and female areas, alongside a flexible bay that can be accessed from either side, thus enhancing patient experience and safety. The architects have assured that the new extension will harmoniously integrate with the existing structures of St Helens Hospital, maintaining the aesthetic and functional integrity of the healthcare environment. Furthermore, it is expected to improve the overall patient experience by reducing waiting times for gastrointestinal treatments, a critical concern for many seeking timely medical intervention. In addition to increasing capacity, the enhancements will prioritize patient privacy and dignity, aligning with the standards set forth by the Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy (JAG) and other relevant healthcare design guidelines. The public consultation period for the application is open until December 24, allowing community members to voice their opinions before the final determination deadline of January 24. Stakeholders and residents are encouraged to engage in this process, as their feedback could play a pivotal role in the project's progression. As healthcare demands continue to rise, the proposed extension at St Helens Hospital represents a proactive step towards ensuring that the community has access to the necessary medical services in a timely and dignified manner.
