The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Occidental has officially declared a state of calamity following the recent eruption of the Kanlaon Volcano last Monday. This decision, made during a special session on Friday, was reached unanimously in response to the recommendation from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC). The declaration aims to activate essential disaster response mechanisms, including the release of calamity funds and the implementation of a price freeze on basic necessities and prime commodities. Raul Fernandez, Director of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Western Visayas, emphasized the significance of this declaration in enhancing disaster response operations. The authorization allows local government units to utilize the Quick Response Fund (QRF) to assist residents impacted by the volcanic activity. As evacuation measures are underway, these funds are critical in facilitating immediate support to those in need. In a video address, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. addressed the nation, underscoring the critical role of accurate communication during such disasters. He cautioned the public about the dangers of misinformation, declaring, "Truth will save lives, fake news will kill." The President's remarks highlight the potential consequences of inaccurate reporting, which can lead to confusion and jeopardize safety protocols, particularly regarding evacuation efforts. The President assured citizens that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) is committed to providing timely updates and advisories in clear, accessible language. He urged the public to rely on official communications and to be vigilant against the spread of false information, particularly on social media platforms. "I urge everyone, especially those refusing to evacuate, to heed the warnings of our authorities," he stated emphatically. Amidst the eruption's aftermath, significant efforts are being made to assist those affected. Over 45,000 residents have been evacuated from a six-kilometer danger zone surrounding the volcano, with an additional 84,000 potentially needing relocation. The government has mobilized resources, with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), local government units, and non-governmental organizations working in concert to deliver humanitarian aid. Reports indicate that more than P11.3 million in assistance has already been distributed to affected families, with P9.8 million of that amount sourced from DSWD. The DSWD has also announced that it has prepared P129 million in standby funds and a stockpile of food and non-food items, ready to support local governments should the need arise. The situation in Canlaon City, situated at the volcano's foothills, has become particularly urgent as residents face the immediate impacts of the eruption. As the government reassures the public of its readiness and commitment to assist, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of those affected by the unfolding crisis. The eruption of Kanlaon has not only posed a natural disaster threat but has also underscored the importance of community resilience and reliable communication in times of emergency. The ongoing situation is a reminder of the power of nature and the vital role of accurate information in safeguarding lives.
