A devastating landslide occurred in the Arhavi district of Türkiye, shifting an estimated 100,000 tons of soil and leading to the tragic loss of four lives. The incident unfolded around 3:30 a.m. on November 16, resulting in the immediate closure of the Black Sea coastal road in both directions. Emergency responders worked tirelessly, and after a day of searching, they recovered the bodies of those trapped in a vehicle that had been buried beneath the debris. Initial investigations suggest that the landslide may have been triggered by a magnitude 4.7 earthquake that struck the nearby Hemşin district in Rize just a day prior. This earthquake raised alarm bells, as Rize is not typically classified among Türkiye's most earthquake-prone areas. The geological implications of such tremors are profound, especially in regions like the Eastern Black Sea, where the terrain is susceptible to landslides. Professor Dr. Hakan Ersoy, a geological engineer from Karadeniz Technical University, spoke on the matter, explaining the correlation between earthquakes and landslides. "Türkiye is prone to earthquakes. In our own district, we have gradually begun to experience the earthquake's aftereffects. According to our prediction, earthquakes do trigger the landslides. This is the manner in which we continue our line of work," he stated. Following the earthquake in Rize, two additional landslides were reported in the Çayeli district, underscoring the need for a comprehensive evaluation of landslide risks in light of geological shifts. Dr. Ersoy pointed out that the coastal areas, stretching from Georgia's Batumi to Türkiye's Giresun and Trabzon, frequently experience minor earthquakes ranging from magnitudes 2 to 3. This raises crucial questions about the potential for these smaller tremors to contribute to landslides in the region. As authorities assess the aftermath of the landslide and its connections to seismic activity, the urgency for increased monitoring and preparedness in earthquake-prone areas becomes evident. The tragic events in Arhavi serve as a reminder of the natural forces at play in Türkiye and the importance of understanding their implications for safety and infrastructure. The recovery efforts will continue, but the community is left grappling with the reality of both loss and the need for increased vigilance in the face of nature’s unpredictability.
