Thousands of residents in Negros Island are grappling with the aftermath of the explosive eruption of Kanlaon Volcano, which occurred on December 9. The eruption has forced many families to evacuate their homes, with areas within a six-kilometer radius of the volcano declared a danger zone. As a result, Negros Occidental has been placed under a state of calamity, with over 14,000 evacuees currently seeking shelter in various evacuation centers. Many of these families face an uncertain wait, as they may need to remain in these centers even after the holiday season. The Philippine government, alongside various non-governmental organizations and community groups, is mobilizing relief efforts to assist those affected by the disaster. Immediate humanitarian aid is crucial to support the displaced families who are dealing with the loss of their homes and livelihoods. Several organizations have initiated donation drives aimed at providing essential supplies to those in need. BACH Project PH is spearheading a P50 donation campaign to procure basic necessities for both families and animals impacted by the eruption. Community members can contribute by dropping off in-kind donations at Pawssion Coworking Space in Bacolod City. The De La Salle Brothers Incorporated Social Action Unit, along with the Lasallian Justice and Peace Office, is also actively seeking donations for the evacuees. They specifically need sleeping bags, modular tents, face masks, and baby diapers. Cash donations to facilitate their relief efforts are also welcomed. Youth organizations, such as the Sangguniang Kabataan Council of barangays Bata, Granada, and Vista Alegre, have stepped up to collect in-kind donations including food, clothing, and face masks. Their grassroots efforts highlight the community's commitment to helping those in distress. Additionally, the Pamatan-on nga Mangunguma nga Negros Alliance has issued a call for both cash and in-kind contributions to assist those affected by the volcanic eruption. Their initiative emphasizes the importance of local solidarity in times of crisis. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Kabankalan has opened its doors to those in need by accepting cash and in-kind donations. Essential items such as food, water, hygiene kits, and sleeping mats can be dropped off at local parishes throughout Negros. Saint Vincent Ferrer Shrine in La Castellana has also joined the relief efforts, calling for both cash and in-kind donations while providing shelter to evacuees. The shrine's community involvement underscores the role of faith-based organizations in disaster response. As the situation continues to evolve, the need for support remains critical. The local and wider Philippine community is urged to come together to assist those affected by the Kanlaon Volcano eruption. Every contribution, no matter how small, can significantly impact the lives of families facing this challenging ordeal.
