President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has pledged a more robust governmental response to the recent eruption of Mt. Kanlaon, which has had a significant impact on residents in Negros Island. In a recent address, he emphasized that safeguarding the welfare of the populace is the highest priority for his administration. In light of the eruption, which has compelled the evacuation of at least 45,000 residents from a six-kilometer danger zone, Marcos stated, "We will step up. We will level up. Any escalation in damages and destruction will be met with a stronger government response." This proclamation reflects a commitment to not only address the immediate needs of those affected but also to prepare for potential future developments stemming from the volcanic activity. The government is currently collaborating closely with local government units to facilitate assistance and disaster response. President Marcos highlighted the intention to evacuate an estimated 84,000 individuals as part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure community safety. In an effort to keep citizens informed, the President underscored the importance of reliable information in effective disaster response. He reassured the public that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) would continue to disseminate real-time advisories in clear and understandable language. As the situation evolves, the government's proactive stance aims to mitigate the effects of the eruption and provide aid to those displaced. Marcos’s administration faces the critical challenge of balancing immediate emergency response with long-term recovery efforts.
