BACOLOD CITY - Bacolod City is stepping up to support local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental that have been impacted by the recent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano. Mayor Albee Benitez has expressed a commitment to providing necessary assistance as local communities navigate the challenges posed by the natural disaster. In a statement, Mayor Benitez indicated that he is currently awaiting updates from La Castellana regarding the number of evacuees and the specific needs of those affected. Meanwhile, the city has already mobilized resources, supplying essential goods and transportation assistance to help residents in distress. The city has also established two evacuation centers, poised to accommodate evacuees should the situation worsen. "We've ensured that even during December, we have enough resources to address any eventualities," Benitez affirmed, emphasizing the city’s proactive stance in disaster preparedness. As the holiday season approaches, Benitez noted that the city is adopting a cautious approach to spending. Recent calamities—including stronger typhoons, heavy rains, and now the volcanic eruption—have prompted a reevaluation of financial allocations for holiday events. “We need to prepare for possible disasters, and spending wisely on holiday events is the right approach,” he stated. He underscored the importance of resilience in the face of these adversities. The mayor also indicated that a thorough assessment of the situation on the ground will dictate whether additional financial support will be necessary. “We’ll see. We will definitely fill the gap if it’s necessary,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to the well-being of affected residents. For those looking to extend their support, the mayor advised that donations can be channeled through the Department of Social Services and Development (DSSD), highlighting community solidarity in times of crisis. Fortunately, Bacolod City has been spared from the eruption’s direct effects, largely due to favorable wind conditions. “There have been no reports of the city being affected,” Benitez noted, adding that the city remains vigilant and prepared for any future eruptions. With sufficient logistical supplies in place, Bacolod is ready to assist its neighbors while ensuring its own residents remain safe and supported.
