In the wake of Kanlaon Volcano's recent eruption on December 9, 2023, the residents of Negros Occidental have faced an overwhelming crisis marked by the urgent need for basic necessities, particularly clean water. As thousands of families were forced to evacuate their homes, Joel Baldonasa, a compassionate entrepreneur and owner of a water refilling station in Cadiz City, stepped forward to address this critical need. Baldonasa's quick response in mobilizing his resources and network highlights the resilience and sense of community that emerges during times of disaster. By December 11, he was actively appealing for donations of empty water gallons to fill with purified water destined for those most affected by the volcanic activity. "Every donated container means another family can have clean water," Baldonasa emphasized, showcasing the vital role that community support plays in disaster response. This is not Baldonasa's first experience with disaster relief. He had previously organized a similar initiative following the volcano’s eruption in June, when he distributed 200 containers of drinkable water to communities grappling with the aftermath. His motivation stems from a personal understanding of hardship; having grown up in a remote village facing numerous challenges, he has always aimed to uplift those around him. In a show of unity and goodwill, Baldonasa's wife, residing in the United States, mobilized her colleagues to gather resources, amplifying their collective mission to assist those in dire need. While she worked tirelessly from afar, Baldonasa and his dedicated team at the refilling station focused on cleaning and refilling the donated containers, ensuring that every drop of water was safe for consumption. The urgency of their efforts cannot be overstated. As the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) officially recommended a state of calamity on December 12, reports indicated that residents could remain in evacuation centers for an extended period. With the volcano still active and the alert level raised, the situation remains precarious. In addition to the challenges posed by the eruption, the Department of Tourism has advised travelers to avoid affected areas, halting activities that typically attract visitors and temporarily closing popular destinations such as Mambukal Resort. The impact of the disaster stretches beyond immediate safety concerns, affecting livelihoods and the local economy. Baldonasa remains resolute in his mission, hoping to surpass his previous distribution record in the ongoing relief efforts. "Water is life, especially during disasters. It’s not just about quenching thirst; it’s about showing people that they are not alone, that someone cares," he stated, embodying the spirit of empathy and action that defines a true community leader. As the recovery process unfolds, Baldonasa’s initiative serves as a beacon of hope, illustrating the power of compassion in the face of adversity. His story not only highlights the pressing need for clean water in disaster-stricken regions but also underscores the importance of community solidarity in tackling challenges that threaten the fabric of daily life. In times of crisis, it is individuals like Joel Baldonasa who remind us all of our shared humanity and the impact of a single act of kindness.
