A wildfire in Malibu, known as the Franklin Fire, has escalated dramatically since it first ignited late Monday night, forcing evacuation orders and warnings for up to 20,000 residents, including prominent figures such as Cher and 98-year-old actor Dick Van Dyke. The blaze has scorched more than 2,800 acres in less than a day, with authorities working tirelessly to protect homes and businesses in the community renowned for its stunning coastal views and celebrity clientele. As the sun rose on Tuesday, the National Weather Service reported a slight shift in conditions that could aid firefighters, as the strongest Santa Ana winds, which have historically exacerbated wildfire risks, began to diminish. However, gusty winds are expected to linger through Wednesday morning, maintaining a critical fire danger, particularly in mountainous areas. Malibu, a coastal enclave with a population of approximately 10,000, has faced numerous wildfires over the years, but the rapid advance of the Franklin Fire has left residents and officials on edge. Mayor Doug Stewart described the situation as “traumatic,” noting that city officials were forced to relocate their operations to Calabasas as flames threatened City Hall. The University of Pepperdine was also affected; around 3,000 students were confined to campus as flames roared just beyond the canyon. Many students evacuated their dorms, navigating through smoke and ash to reach the library for safety. A preliminary assessment from the Los Angeles County Fire Department indicates that at least seven structures have been destroyed and eight more damaged, although the total impact may still be unfolding. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Dick Van Dyke, who was among the first to evacuate, expressed his concern for his home and community. "Arlene and I have safely evacuated with our animals except for Bobo, who escaped as we were leaving," he shared, referring to his pet cat. Cher also confirmed her evacuation and is currently staying at a hotel, according to her publicist. The flames began their destructive path shortly before midnight, racing southwards and crossing the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, threatening luxury homes that line the coast. At one point, the historic Malibu Pier came under threat, but officials reported that it was ultimately spared from destruction. In an effort to mitigate fire risks amidst the intense winds, Southern California Edison cut power to about 40,000 customers, including 11,000 in Los Angeles County. This preventive measure was taken to reduce the potential for electrical equipment to spark further fires, particularly given the disastrous Woolsey Fire of 2018, which was similarly linked to Edison equipment and resulted in significant loss of life and property. Though Malibu is often associated with its wealthiest residents, community leaders emphasize the importance of supporting lower- and middle-class families who are equally impacted by the ongoing crisis. Kasey Earnest, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu, highlighted the resilience of these families, whom she describes as “the heart of Malibu.” As the community rallies together during this challenging time, the spirit of perseverance and solidarity continues to shine amidst the looming threat of wildfires.
