The ongoing crisis in Negros Occidental following the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano has prompted the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to step in with crucial support for the affected communities. With an allocation of P133.7 million dedicated to assist the victims, the government's response is both timely and necessary. On December 10, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian made a visit to an evacuation center situated at La Castellana Elementary School, where he personally oversaw the distribution of essential aid. During this visit, he announced the delivery of food packs and non-food items valued at P597,800, aimed at supporting nearly 980 families displaced by the volcanic activity. In addressing the evacuees, Gatchalian conveyed a message of reassurance from the President, emphasizing that the DSWD would continue to provide support as long as necessary. "The assurance of our President is this: While you are here, the DSWD -- our department -- will continue to assist and support you, so please do not worry," he stated, highlighting the government's commitment to the welfare of its citizens during this challenging time. The DSWD has prepared a substantial stock of food and non-food items, totaling P133.2 million, alongside a standby fund of P500,000 to ensure they can meet the immediate needs of the displaced individuals. This proactive approach is critical as many families continue to face uncertainty regarding their homes and livelihoods due to the ongoing volcanic threat. Secretary Gatchalian urged evacuees to remain cautious and to heed warnings issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the Office of Civil Defense, and local officials. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety, advising families not to return to their homes until the risk of further eruptions has been resolved. Accompanying Gatchalian during this critical visit were Undersecretary Diana Rose Cajipe, DSWD Regional Directors Arwin Razo and Shalaine Marie Lucero, and Disaster Response Management Division chief Erlyn Garcia. Together, they assessed the situation on the ground and ensured that the distribution of aid was efficient and effective. As the situation develops, the commitment of the DSWD and the Philippine government to support the victims of the Kanlaon eruption remains resolute, with plans in place to monitor and address the ongoing needs of the affected populations. The resilience of the community, paired with government assistance, will be vital in navigating this difficult period and eventually rebuilding their lives after the eruption.
