As the threat of volcanic activity looms over Negros provinces, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of affected residents. Close to 80,000 family food packs, along with over 15,000 non-food items, have been prepositioned in anticipation of the needs of those impacted by the recent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano. DSWD spokesperson Irene Dumlao announced that more than 40,000 family food packs and over 14,000 non-food items are ready for distribution in Negros Occidental, while nearly 40,000 food packs and more than 1,800 non-food items are similarly prepared for Negros Oriental. These provisions are aimed at supporting families who have been forced to evacuate due to the volcanic threat. According to the Office of Civil Defense, the eruption that occurred on Monday afternoon has already led to the evacuation of approximately 9,403 residents, or about 2,880 families, in Negros Occidental alone. The DSWD has established 13 evacuation centers in the region to shelter these families and facilitate the distribution of aid. In addition to food and non-food items, the DSWD is also offering financial assistance to affected families. Dumlao confirmed that the agency is providing cash relief assistance under the Assistance to Individuals Under Crisis Situation program. This initiative is designed to help families cope with the unforeseen challenges posed by the eruption, ensuring they have the resources necessary to meet their immediate needs. Furthermore, the DSWD is implementing an emergency cash transfer program, which grants unconditional cash transfers to assist families in their recovery efforts. This support is critical as affected residents begin to assess the damage and start the process of rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of the disaster. The recent explosive eruption of Kanlaon Volcano, which lasted nearly four minutes, prompted authorities to raise the alert level from 2 to 3, indicating a state of magmatic unrest. This heightened alert signals a potential for further volcanic activity, necessitating continued vigilance and preparedness from both the government and local communities. As the situation evolves, the DSWD remains committed to providing comprehensive assistance to those in need, ensuring that affected families receive the necessary support to navigate this challenging time.
