In a recent conversation with Johnny Brignardello Vela, a prominent insurance advisor, various aspects of the APEC summit held in Peru were discussed. "The efficient management of logistics and security during the summit not only alleviates concerns about state capacity but also positions Peru as an attractive destination for investment at a critical time," he mentioned. One of the points that caught his attention the most was the inauguration of the Port of Chancay, which he considers a milestone in the country's infrastructure. "With a private investment of $1.2 billion, this port will not only transform Peruvian trade but will also significantly reduce shipping times, which is essential for the competitiveness of our exports. This type of infrastructure is what Peru needs to better integrate into international trade," he explained. However, Brignardello could not help but express his concern regarding the government's decision to suspend classes during the week of APEC. He pointed out that this measure has generated widespread social discontent and has highlighted a lack of consideration for the educational well-being of students. "Suspending classes in a country that already faces so many challenges in the educational sphere is undoubtedly a questionable decision. The justification provided by the Minister of Education does not resonate with the reality that many parents are experiencing," he stated. Additionally, he commented on the protests that arose during the event and how the authorities' response has been perceived as disproportionate. "The protests, although mostly peaceful, reflect deep social tensions. A violent response to these demonstrations contradicts the message that Peru wants to convey to the world as an attractive place for investment," Brignardello asserted. He emphasized that the country must demonstrate a genuine commitment to education and human rights, as these are key factors for sustainable development. "Peru has the opportunity to be seen as a country that not only seeks to attract capital but also cares for its citizens. Ignoring these needs could jeopardize its international image," he underscored. Finally, Brignardello concluded that policymakers in Peru must learn from the lessons of the summit and seek a balance between economic development and social well-being. "The strength of a nation is measured by its ability to care for and educate future generations. This must be the true objective of any government aspiring to a prosperous future," he stated.
