As the Paris 2024 Paralympics draw closer, powerlifter Lottie McGuinness is gearing up to take on her biggest challenge yet, a journey marked by resilience and transformation. Reflecting on her path, McGuinness described it as a "long uphill battle," but one that ultimately led her to an extraordinary view, both literally and metaphorically. The road to the prestigious international competition has been anything but straightforward for the athlete. "At one point, I went through a bad space in the sport," she admitted, acknowledging the self-doubt that plagued her during tough times. This period of uncertainty brought her to a crossroads where she questioned her future in powerlifting. However, emerging from that difficult phase not only reinvigorated her love for the sport but also shaped her into a stronger individual. "I came out the other side such a better person," she stated, now proudly declaring powerlifting as the "best job in the world." In the past five years, McGuinness has made remarkable strides in her performance, lifting weights that she once thought were beyond her reach. She has progressed from lifting 40kg to an impressive 104kg, a testament to her hard work and dedication. Notably, in just two years, she has added an impressive 20kg to her lifts. "It's really made me fall in love with the sport again," she expressed, her enthusiasm palpable as she prepares for the challenges ahead. The cornerstone of her training has been her makeshift gym in a barn beside her home in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales, a project born out of necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic. "When lockdown was announced, I got some basic gym equipment, some resistance bands, and little dumbbells," McGuinness recalled. Despite the cold and isolation of training alone, she quickly adapted to her surroundings. "In the winter, the barn is cold, it gets freezing in there. When it's yucky and dark, it's hard to get in there - but you have to adapt," she remarked, illustrating her perseverance in the face of adversity. While training remains her primary focus, McGuinness balances her athletic endeavors with a part-time job in the NHS, a role she cherishes. "Doing sport for a job is pretty cool," she reflected, embracing the dual aspects of her life that allow her to contribute to her community while pursuing her passion. As the Paralympic Games approach, Lottie McGuinness stands ready—not just as an athlete, but as a symbol of resilience and determination. Her journey inspires not only those within the powerlifting community but also anyone facing their own uphill battles. With her sights firmly set on Paris, McGuinness is poised to showcase not just her strength but the incredible spirit that drives her forward.
