Galilea Fuentes, a young promise of Peruvian volleyball, has captured the attention of many in the sports world. At just 14 years old, she has become an emblematic figure for girls in Cusco, who see her as a role model. Galilea's outstanding performance in last year's South American U16 Championship, where Peru secured its qualification for the World Cup, has positioned her as one of the most promising players in the U17 category. With a blend of humility and determination, the young athlete asserts that her success is not only measured in victories but also in the inspiration she can provide to others. During a recent interview, Galilea shared her experience as the youngest member of the team. "I have always felt that being the youngest puts less pressure on me," she commented. This perspective has allowed her to enjoy the game and continue learning without the burden of fear of failure. Her first experience with the national team was last year, where she received the title of best middle blocker in a tournament that marked a milestone in her career. "It was incredible," she recalls nostalgically. "All the sacrifice was worth it thanks to the support of my parents and my teammates." Galilea's journey into volleyball began at her school, San José La Salle, where her talent was discovered by teacher Jesús Castillo. Her participation in a championship in Tingo María opened doors to the capital city, where her life took a turn. "They offered me a place in a school and the opportunity to play in Lima, but we had to expedite the process," she explains. This life change was not easy, but her passion for the sport was stronger. The transition from a quiet life in Cusco to the bustling Lima was not without challenges. "I was offered a spot at Casa Santa, but at first, I came to a rented room with my mom," Galilea recounts. Despite the distance and difficulties, the young athlete remains focused on her dream of becoming a professional volleyball player, without dismissing her aspiration to become a doctor in the future. "I want to make the most of the opportunities that sports provide me, but my studies are equally important." The pressure of competitiveness in youth volleyball is palpable, but Galilea has found ways to cope with it. "My parents always support me and remind me of humility. It doesn’t matter if we lose; we are girls, and the most important thing is to learn and enjoy the game," she wisely states. The presence of psychologists on her team has also been a valuable resource for managing stress and the challenges they face. Galilea also reflects on her life in Cusco and how that experience has shaped her. "It was a family environment, where we all took care of each other. Now I'm in a different place, but I always carry the support of my people with me," she assures. This connection to her roots drives her to move forward and represent her city with pride in every match. Her relationship with her teammates has evolved from a tense beginning to a solid camaraderie. "At first, we didn't know each other well, but now we are like sisters," she shares. This unity has been crucial for her development, as they each support one another during training and competitions. Galilea feels protected, especially as the youngest in the group. Regarding the support from fans, the young athlete hopes that the Peruvian public will stand by them in both good times and bad. "It's nice to feel the backing of the people, and I hope they don't criticize us too much," she comments with a touch of hope. The passion for volleyball in Peru is palpable, and Galilea is aware of the role she plays in it. The future looks bright for Galilea Fuentes, and her story is just the beginning. With her determination and the support of those around her, she has all the necessary tools to leave an indelible mark on Peruvian volleyball. Every time she steps onto the court, she not only plays for herself but for all the girls who dream of following in her footsteps. Her message is clear: perseverance, humility, and love for the sport are the keys to success.
