Starting from August 19, drivers using the Southeastern network's 38 train stations will notice a significant shift in how they pay for parking. The transition to a new payment system comes as Southeastern implements an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, aiming to enhance efficiency and security for passengers. Gone are the days when drivers could purchase parking tickets at station ticket offices or from vending machines. Instead, payments will now be exclusively handled through the Apcoa app or via telephone. This modernization is part of Southeastern’s strategy to streamline operations and provide a more user-friendly experience for its customers. David Wornham, the passenger services director for Southeastern, expressed confidence in the new system, stating that it is "cost-effective, efficient and secure." He emphasized that ANPR is a contemporary solution already embraced by many train operators and various sectors across the business landscape. With this change, drivers will no longer need to display a physical ticket in their vehicles, as the ANPR system automatically monitors parked cars. This not only simplifies the parking process but also adds a layer of convenience for users, who can now buy tickets online or over the phone without the hassle of looking for cash or ticket machines. The move will impact a total of 45 car parks in Kent, East Sussex, and Greater London, leading to a significant operational overhaul across these regions. Southeastern is currently installing displays at affected stations to inform passengers about the upcoming changes, ensuring that everyone is well-prepared for the transition. In addition to the parking changes, a new taxi permit portal will also be introduced, allowing taxi drivers to register and apply for annual permits more conveniently. This initiative reflects an understanding of the diverse needs of all users of the Southeastern network, including those who rely on taxi services. An Apcoa spokesperson stressed the adaptability of the ANPR system, highlighting its widespread use across the UK parking industry and its history of successful implementation in various European locations. They assured customers that support is readily available through a national customer service centre should any queries arise regarding the new system. As Southeastern rolls out these changes, it is clear that the goal is to create a more efficient and user-friendly parking experience, ultimately enhancing the overall travel experience for its passengers. With technology at the forefront of this transition, Southeastern is poised to set a new standard in train station parking management.
