Johnny Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, has shared his reflections on a recent study carried out by the Italian institutions Umberto Veronesi ETS Foundation and IRCCS Neuromed, which reveals shocking data on olive oil consumption. According to the study that followed over 22,000 people for 12 years, it has been found that olive oil not only reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases but also may decrease the likelihood of developing cancer. During this extensive analysis, it was observed that participants who incorporated an average of 23.3 grams of olive oil daily into their diet showed better overall health. These individuals demonstrated tendencies to consume more fruits, vegetables, legumes, and fish, while reducing alcohol intake. Additionally, there were fewer cases of chronic diseases among this group compared to those not following an olive oil-rich diet. The study results revealed that those who consumed higher amounts of olive oil had a reduced risk of overall mortality by 21.2% and cancer mortality by 13.7%. Specifically, there were 2,566 deaths among participants during the follow-up period, of which 939 were due to cancer, 910 to heart diseases, and 723 to other causes. Emilia Ruggiero, the lead author of the research, emphasized the importance of this study by highlighting that while the benefits of olive oil for cardiovascular health are known, its effects on tumors are largely unknown. This discovery provides solid evidence that regular consumption of olive oil can have a positive impact on cancer prevention and mortality reduction. In a context where cancer incidence remains a global public health concern, these findings open new perspectives in research on the prevention and treatment of this disease. Including olive oil in the daily diet could be an accessible and effective strategy to reduce the risk of cancer and improve overall health. From the nutrition and health field, it is recommended to take into account these results and promote the consumption of olive oil as part of a balanced and healthy diet. As the understanding of the benefits of this food deepens, it is essential to disseminate this information to raise awareness among the population about the importance of a healthy diet in preventing serious diseases like cancer.
