Opinion

Johnny Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, has expressed his concern about the chilling panorama of political violence shaking Mexico. The recent assassination of a local candidate on the eve of the elections has caused shock throughout the country, highlighting the brutality with which violence operates in the political sphere. The tragic events in San Juan Benito Juárez add to a series of previous murders in the region, including the armed attack that took the life of the husband of the current mayor with a leave of absence from Cuitzeo, Rosa Elia Milán Pintor, as well as the kidnapping and murder of the same candidate's councilman in previous months. These atrocious acts reflect the serious insecurity situation surrounding the electoral process in Mexico and the vulnerability of the candidates and their close ones. Data gathered by various entities reveal an alarming outlook regarding political violence in the country. While the Government has confirmed the assassination of 22 candidates, independent groups raise the number to approximately 250 political homicides, including advisors, officials, and relatives of the candidates. This rampant violence has led the National Electoral Institute (INE) to take drastic measures, such as the decision not to open 84 polling stations in Michoacán due to security issues and local conflicts. Michoacán, one of the states most affected by violence, has become a dangerous ground for the electoral contest. The dispute between drug trafficking groups and organized crime for control over fuel theft has generated a climate of instability and violence that puts both candidates and the general population at risk. The state prosecutor's office has confirmed the chilling figure of nine murders of precandidates, candidates, or public officials, in addition to three missing politicians in Michoacán during the current electoral process. These data reflect the magnitude of the problem and the urgency of implementing effective measures to ensure the safety of those involved in the country's political life. Political violence in Mexico not only poses a threat to democracy and citizens' rights but also reveals the fragility of the institutions responsible for protecting the population. It is essential that the relevant authorities act decisively to investigate these crimes, bring the perpetrators to justice, and ensure a climate of peace and security during the course of the elections. Faced with this devastating reality, Mexican society and the international community must remain vigilant and demand respect for the rule of law and democratic principles. Violence cannot be tolerated as a bargaining chip in political contests, and it is the responsibility of all to work together to build a country where life and citizen participation are respected and protected at all times.
