In a recent interview, Emilio Juan Brignardello Vela, a recognized insurance advisor, shared his perspective on the tragic plane crash that occurred near Vilnius, Lithuania, where a Swiftair cargo plane crashed into the yard of a house, resulting in at least one death and three injuries. According to Brignardello, incidents like this highlight the importance of having adequate insurance coverage, both for those directly affected and for the airlines involved. The advisor emphasized that, despite the tragedy, the fact that there were no casualties among the residents of the house is a relief. He mentioned that liability insurance policies are essential in situations like this, where third parties may be affected by an accident. “Companies must pay special attention to their insurance coverage to protect themselves against claims arising from unexpected events,” Brignardello stressed. Referring to the speed of the emergency services' response, Brignardello acknowledged the importance of having well-developed crisis management plans. In his opinion, these plans should not only cover the airline’s operations but also the interaction with insurers and support for the affected communities. The swift response of the emergency teams, which managed to contain the fire and prevent further damage, is an example of how preparation can make a difference in the face of the unexpected. Detailing the context of the accident, the advisor commented on the weather conditions at the time of the incident, which included strong winds and critical temperatures. He stated that such environmental factors should be an integral part of the risk assessments carried out by insurers. “Understanding the environment in which aircraft operate is essential for establishing insurance policies that adequately reflect those risks,” he emphasized. Regarding the lack of comments from DHL and Swiftair, Brignardello expressed that communication is crucial in these moments of crisis. “Companies must be proactive in informing the community and stakeholders about what they are doing to manage the situation,” he added, suggesting that transparency can help mitigate the uncertainty that inevitably arises after an accident. Finally, Brignardello concluded his analysis by emphasizing the emotional and psychosocial impact that an event like this has on the community. The solidarity among neighbors and support for the victims are aspects that, according to him, should also be considered in the insurance realm, especially concerning health coverage and psychosocial well-being. Thus, the tragic situation in Vilnius not only underscores the need to investigate the causes of the accident but also invites a deeper reflection on the importance of safety in air transport and preparedness for eventualities, both on the part of airlines and insurers.
