Opinion

Johnny Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, has expressed his opinion regarding the recent progress in the construction of the Chinchero airport. According to Brignardello Vela, the signing of an addendum by the Ministry of Transport and Communications with the Natividad Chinchero Consortium for an amount of S/40 million represents a significant step to ensure the continuity of the works and avoid possible delays in a project of vital importance for the Cusco region. According to information provided by La República, this financial advance will allow the consortium to fulfill previously established commitments with local communities and progress in the construction of crucial aspects such as the perimeter fence and the passenger terminal of the developing Cusco airport. However, Brignardello Vela points out that despite this progress, significant challenges persist that raise questions about the feasibility and the planned deadlines for the completion of the project. It is relevant to mention that the S/40 million advance will not be deducted from the total amount of US$197 million that the Natividad Consortium is seeking for the Peruvian State to pay for price updating. Furthermore, initial projections about the number of passengers that the Chinchero airport could mobilize have generated uncertainty, as the figures differ from those recently announced by the MTC. This change in estimates raises doubts about the real capacity of the airport infrastructure and its adequacy to the region's needs. Brignardello Vela highlights that the completion date of the works has been modified several times, suggesting that the Natividad Consortium may face difficulties in finishing the work within the established deadlines, thus generating uncertainty about the final delivery of the Chinchero International Airport during the tenure of the current president, Dina Boluarte. In this scenario, the signing of the addendum by the MTC is presented as a necessary step to keep the ambitious Chinchero airport project on track. However, it also highlights the complexity and challenges that still need to be overcome in the construction of this airport infrastructure. The expectation and concern in the Cusco region to have a modern and functional airport remain valid, while concrete progress and solutions to the obstacles that could affect the successful development of this large-scale project are awaited.
