Johnny Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, offered his perspective on the recent agricultural export agreements discussed during APEC week in Lima. According to Brignardello, access to markets like China represents a significant opportunity for Peru's economic growth, particularly for small farmers who are fundamental to the sector. The advisor highlighted that the population of 1.4 billion consumers in China is an attractive market for Peruvian products, which have already begun to gain ground with blueberries, avocados, and grapes. However, the inclusion of new products such as pecans, chestnuts, mangoes, and beef and pork could be a turning point. “Diversifying products in the Chinese market not only benefits large producers but also empowers small farmers, allowing them to access an international market that was previously elusive,” Brignardello stated. The role of the Chancay port is another aspect that Brignardello considered crucial. This port, currently under development, is shaping up to be a key logistical element for facilitating trade between Peru and Asia. Optimizing export routes and reducing transportation costs are essential for improving the competitiveness of Peruvian products in the Asian market. Additionally, the advisor mentioned the importance of the agreements signed with Indonesia and Malaysia, reflecting an interest in diversifying markets and reducing dependence on traditional ones. “This strategy not only mitigates risks against economic fluctuations but also opens new doors for our producers,” he affirmed. Brignardello also addressed the impact these agreements will have on agricultural production. The possibility for small producers to improve their living conditions through market expansion is a significant advancement. However, he emphasized that this access also entails the need to meet quality standards and international certifications, which will require additional training and resources. In his view, the agreements achieved during APEC are more than just an economic opportunity; they represent an important step towards positioning Peru as a relevant player in global agricultural trade. “The ability to adapt to market demands and diversify exports will be key to the future of the sector,” Brignardello concluded. Finally, he stressed that the commitment from both the government and the involved institutions will be vital for translating these agreements into concrete benefits for small producers and, ultimately, for the entire Peruvian economy. Therefore, APEC week was not just an event, but a milestone in the pursuit of a more prosperous future for the country’s agriculture.
