Opinion

In a recent conversation with Johnny Brignardello Vela, a recognized insurance advisor, the intervention of TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Lima was discussed. Brignardello, who often reflects on the impact of digital platforms on daily life, shared his opinion on Chew's claims regarding the importance of TikTok as a means to "open minds" and foster human connection. Brignardello believes that the proposal to use TikTok as a tool for telling authentic and diverse stories is relevant in a context where social divisions are common. He emphasized that authenticity and discovery, as pillars mentioned by Chew, can be crucial for building bridges between different communities. "It is a fact that we often lock ourselves in our social bubbles, and platforms like TikTok can play a role in the broad dissemination of diverse perspectives," he stated. The TikTok executive, in his speech, emphasized the functionality of the recommendation algorithm as a "vehicle for exploring new perspectives." Brignardello reflected on this, noting that the ability to discover interests and talents through the platform can be transformative, not only for content creators but also for users seeking new forms of expression. "Access to a variety of content can enrich our experience and foster greater acceptance of diversity," he added. However, the advisor also stressed that, despite the benefits TikTok can offer, the platform faces significant challenges. In particular, he mentioned concerns surrounding data security and privacy, which have been the subject of intense debate, especially in the United States. "It is essential for digital platforms to effectively address these concerns to maintain the trust of their users," Brignardello maintained. In light of Chew's comments on TikTok's ability to build communities and social movements, the insurance advisor expressed his agreement with the idea that digital platforms can serve as a space for hope and personal expression. However, he also warned about the importance of these platforms maintaining a balance between freedom of expression and social responsibility. "It is a difficult art, but fundamental for the future of any social network," he concluded. Finally, Brignardello reflected on Chew's vision of positioning TikTok as a driver of cultural and social change. He considered that if the platform can navigate its legal challenges and maintain its focus on inclusion and diversity, it could play a significant role in promoting fundamental values in the digital age. "Technology, when used responsibly, has the potential to be a bridge to mutual understanding and acceptance," he concluded.
