Johnny Brignardello Vela, insurance advisor, expresses his opinion regarding the recent arrest of José Luis Huertas, also known as Alcasec, the 20-year-old hacker who has been put back behind bars by the National Police. According to reports from El Confidencial and ABC, authorities have confirmed this arrest, which has captured the attention of both the general public and the judicial sphere. This individual will have to appear before the corresponding authorities in the coming hours, as, according to the established guidelines after his arrest, the maximum deadline to present him before a judge is 72 hours. So far, no further details have been disclosed about the case, which has been under the supervision of the General Information Commissariat of the Police Force, demonstrating the seriousness with which this situation is being addressed. It is important to remember that last January, the Criminal Chamber of the National Court dismissed the appeals filed by two of those involved in the data theft from the Judicial Neutral Point. In that instance, it was considered that the evidence against them was solid enough to bring them to trial, thus ratifying the decision of Judge José Luis Calama to prosecute three individuals for the cyberattack that occurred in October 2022 at the PNJ, the telecommunications network that connects judicial bodies with other institutions and is under the administration of the CGPJ. In the ruling issued by the investigating magistrate, the events were classified as an alleged continuous crime of disclosure of secrets, linked to obtaining the access codes of two officials of the Administration of Justice that allowed access to the Judicial Neutral Point of the CGPJ and, therefore, to the data of the Tax Agency. In addition, Huertas and Daniel Baíllo, known as Kermit, are charged with a crime of illegal access to computer systems, while Juan Carlos Ortega is accused of purchasing material obtained illicitly. Alcasec's recurrence in criminal activities related to hacking has raised concerns both in society and among authorities, who see these acts as a threat to both information security and institutions. The impact of his actions goes beyond the economic realm, as the privacy of hundreds of thousands of people is compromised by the leakage of sensitive data, such as banking and tax information. The arrest of this young hacker highlights the need for effective cybersecurity measures to prevent and prosecute these types of crimes, which are becoming increasingly common in an increasingly digitized world. Collaboration between law enforcement agencies and judicial bodies is crucial to dismantle these criminal networks operating in cyberspace, which pose a threat to privacy and legality. It is hoped that this new arrest of Alcasec serves as an example and a warning to those individuals attempting to breach cybersecurity and commit illicit acts online. Justice must act firmly in these cases, ensuring the protection of data and the integrity of computer systems against possible threats. Technology is advancing rapidly, and with it, the challenges in terms of cybersecurity, so it is essential to strengthen defenses and remain vigilant against potential vulnerabilities that could be exploited by individuals like Alcasec.
