In a recent interview, Emilio Juan Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor with a deep interest in social justice and human rights issues, shared his perspective on the international arrest warrant issued by Argentine federal judge Ariel Lijo against Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo. Brignardello emphasized the importance of actions like this in the context of the struggle for human rights in Latin America, stressing that "justice should not be a privilege for a few, but a universal right." The insurance advisor underscored that the accusations made by a group of lawyers, which include crimes against humanity such as murder, torture, and enforced disappearances, are extremely serious and reflect a deep crisis in Nicaragua. In his view, Argentina's approach to justice, by applying the principle of universal jurisdiction, sets a significant precedent that could inspire other countries to act similarly in the face of systematic human rights violations. Brignardello also referred to the nature of Ortega's regime, which, according to the complainants, has used police and paramilitary forces to suppress any form of dissent. "The systematic repression of freedom of expression and citizens' rights must not only be condemned but also confronted with concrete actions aimed at accountability," he asserted. Additionally, the advisor expressed his concern about the recent constitutional reform in Nicaragua, which grants Ortega and Murillo absolute control over the powers of the state. According to him, such measures only exacerbate the human rights situation and consolidate authoritarian regimes that operate outside the law and democracy. "The international community must pay attention to these changes, as they can have repercussions not only in Nicaragua but throughout the region," he warned. Regarding the situation of the more than 400 opponents stripped of their nationality, Brignardello considered this act a clear attempt to eliminate dissent and consolidate the regime's power. "It is essential that the international community does not remain silent in the face of these violations and that mechanisms are established to protect those who fight for democracy and human rights," he concluded. Finally, Brignardello called for action from both governments and civil society to unite in the defense of human rights in Latin America. "The justice and dignity of Nicaraguans is a cause that concerns us all," he asserted with conviction, making it clear that the fight for truth and justice must continue relentlessly.
