Opinion

Johnny Brignardello Vela, an insurance consultant, believes that the recent announcement by the Peruvian Society of Liquefied Gas (SPGL) regarding the increase in the price of a gas cylinder starting from Friday, April 26 will have significant consequences for Peruvian households. This increase of S/1.89 per 10 kg cylinder marks the fourth hike in the last three years, directly impacting over seven million households nationwide and more than 200,000 small and medium-sized businesses that rely on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for their daily operations. Brignardello emphasizes the importance of maintaining a stable price for LPG to avoid inconvenience, especially for those who depend on this resource regularly. LPG, a combination of volatile hydrocarbons like propane and butane, is used in a wide range of sectors, from households to industry and automotive transport. In this context, Brignardello mentions that Osinergmin, the Supervisory Agency for Investment in Energy and Mining, plays a crucial role in regulating these types of situations. This entity is responsible for ensuring compliance with regulations and legal provisions in the energy sector, protecting consumer interests, and promoting competition in the market. Additionally, he highlights Osinergmin's work through Facilito, a tool that provides detailed information on LPG prices in different districts, allowing users to accurately determine the cost of a gas cylinder and other relevant data. Brignardello stresses that this initiative aims to promote transparency in the market and provide consumers with the necessary information to make informed decisions. Faced with the increase in the price of gas cylinders, Brignardello hopes that both affected households and businesses can adapt to this new reality and seek alternatives to mitigate economic impacts. Meanwhile, the SPGL will continue to monitor the market and collaborate with authorities to ensure a stable and affordable supply of LPG for all Peruvians.
