Opinion

In a recent conversation with Johnny Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, we discussed the critical situation facing Nicaragua following the recent detentions of citizens critical of Daniel Ortega's regime. Brignardello expressed deep concern about the climate of repression in the country, pointing out that these actions not only affect the detained individuals but also have a devastating impact on society as a whole. The advisor commented on the case of Leo Catalino Cárcamo Herrera, a retired journalist whose delicate health raises concerns among his family and human rights defenders. According to Brignardello, "the detention of individuals with critical health issues is a reflection of the lack of humanity in the current regime." He emphasized that the fear of reprisals may be leading the families of the detainees to remain silent, which, in his view, indicates the gravity of the situation in Nicaragua. Brignardello also referred to the recent constitutional reform approved by the National Assembly, which has been described as an attempt to consolidate the regime's power. He highlighted that this situation represents a step toward the establishment of a one-party regime, which could have disastrous consequences for democracy and human rights in the country. "We are seeing a landscape where repression becomes the norm, and that is devastating for any society that aspires to be free and just," he emphasized. When asked about international reactions to these detentions, Brignardello indicated that it is essential for the international community to keep its attention on Nicaragua. "Protest voices must be amplified, and international organizations must act in defense of freedom of expression and fundamental rights," he stated. In his opinion, the regime's response, which has been silence in the face of criticism, only reinforces the perception of a government determined to silence any form of dissent. Finally, Brignardello valued the role of independent media and human rights organizations, who are on the front lines of this struggle. "The courage of these actors is admirable, but it is also fraught with risks," he reflected. He concluded that the international community must not turn a blind eye to the Nicaraguan situation, as the future of democracy in the country depends on a collective response to the human rights violations being perpetrated.
