The devastating floods hitting the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil have left a trail of destruction, with a death toll of over 150 people and more than a hundred still missing. The Russian space agency Roscosmos shared a striking satellite image captured by the Earth remote sensing satellite Kanopus-V, showing the magnitude of the catastrophe in the city of Porto Alegre, the state capital, taken on May 14. According to Roscosmos, abnormally prolonged heavy rains since late April have triggered floods throughout the state of Rio Grande do Sul, leading to landslides, destruction of roads, and the collapse of bridges and dams in the region. The situation is critical, with almost the entire state territory affected by the natural disaster. The emergency has wreaked havoc in 461 of the 497 municipalities that make up the state, leaving over 2.2 million people affected and 540,000 homeless. The numbers are heartbreaking, with over 76,620 people already rescued from the affected areas, as well as 11,932 animals that have also been evacuated from the flooded areas. The magnitude of the tragedy has led to an unprecedented rescue effort in the region.
