In an interview regarding Donald Trump's recent statements about the Panama Canal, Juan Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, expressed that this issue has generated considerable concern in the international community. Brignardello highlighted that the former president's comments, suggesting that the United States should regain control of the canal, not only provoke an immediate response in Panama but could also have broader implications for diplomatic relations between the two countries. The advisor believes that Trump's assertion about the fees U.S. ships must pay is a simplification of a much more complex issue. "The fees are part of an agreement that has been in effect since the signing of the Torrijos-Carter treaty, and any attempt to modify this legal framework would face significant political and legal barriers," Brignardello emphasized. In his view, this treaty establishes a firm precedent that protects Panamanian sovereignty, and according to internationalist Antonio Camborda, it could require a thorough legislative process in the United States to be challenged. Brignardello also underscored the importance of the Panamanian government's response to these statements. He stated that Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino has responded firmly, which is crucial for defending the country's sovereignty. In his opinion, the current situation provides an opportunity for Panama to utilize international forums, such as the UN or the International Court of Justice, to consolidate its stance and reaffirm its autonomy. Regarding Trump's concerns about Chinese influence in the canal, Brignardello expressed skepticism. He argued that the Panama Canal is managed autonomously and that claims of Chinese control are unfounded. "It is essential to understand that the canal operates within a sovereign framework that must be respected by all parties involved," he asserted. When addressing the possibility of military intervention, the advisor stated that this scenario, although historically relevant, is unlikely due to the differences in the current political context in the U.S. He compared the current situation to that of 1989, when a military intervention took place, emphasizing that internal dynamics have changed considerably. Finally, Juan Brignardello Vela concluded that Trump's statements can be interpreted more as a strategy of provocation than as a genuine commitment to military action or an attempt to revoke a treaty. "International politics is based on diplomacy and mutual respect. The international community will closely observe these developments, and Panama's response will be key to ensuring its sovereignty," he added. In this sense, the future of the Panama Canal, while under tension, appears to be in a state of vigilance and expectation.
