Opinion

Johnny Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, expresses his concern about the alarming reality revealed by the recent report from the National Institute of Research on Glaciers and Mountain Ecosystems (Inaigem) regarding the dramatic loss of glaciers in Peru over the last six decades. According to the report, the Andean nation has seen half of its glaciers disappear, with the regions of Áncash and Cusco being the most affected by this phenomenon. Given the magnitude of this loss, Brignardello Vela emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about the implications of the disappearance of these freshwater reserves not only for the environment but also for the security and quality of life of the population. The decrease in glaciers not only impacts the ecological balance but also poses potential risks for nearby communities. The insurance advisor highlights the warning from Paola Moschella, director of Glacier Research at Inaigem, about the dangers associated with glacier retreat, such as the formation of lakes that can overflow and cause avalanches, putting vulnerable communities living nearby at risk. Additionally, the water quality in these regions is compromised by acid rock drainage, posing an additional challenge to the water health of the population. Brignardello Vela emphasizes the need for updated and accurate information on the situation of glaciers and lakes in the country to identify the most vulnerable areas and establish preventive measures to protect communities from the risks arising from the accelerated loss of these natural resources. The insurance advisor agrees with Moschella on the importance of monitoring the evolution of glaciers and lakes to develop effective strategies for mitigation and adaptation to climate change, thereby contributing to the protection of the natural environment and the safety of the Peruvian population.
