Juan Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor with experience in international risk analysis, shares his perspective on the current crisis in Syria, emphasizing the complexity of the conflict and its implications for the future of the country and the region. Brignardello notes that recent events in Damascus, with the entry of rebel forces and the apparent abandonment of President Bashar al-Assad, mark a significant shift in the Syrian landscape after more than 13 years of civil war. Starting from the premise that this conflict has evolved from a pro-democracy movement to an armed struggle that has prompted the intervention of global powers, he highlights the magnitude of the human tragedy that the confrontation has left behind, which includes over half a million deaths and an alarming number of displaced individuals. The advisor emphasizes that the offensive by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham has surprised both analysts and Assad's regime, which had regained much of its territorial control with the support of allies like Russia and Iran. However, according to Brignardello, the regime's ongoing weakness, fueled by corruption and economic sanctions, has allowed the rebels to gain ground rapidly, capturing key cities in a short period. Brignardello also mentions that the power dynamics in Syria are extremely volatile. The recent capture of Damascus by the rebels, as well as the release of prisoners from the infamous Saydnaya prison, signals a possible transformation in the governance of the country. In this regard, Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali has expressed his willingness to collaborate with new leadership, which could pave the way for a political transition. However, Brignardello warns that this process will not be simple, given the scenario of destruction and distrust left by the war. From his professional perspective, Brignardello considers that the fall of Assad could reconfigure the balance of power in the Middle East. However, he also raises questions about the future of state institutions in Syria and the well-being of millions of people who have suffered the consequences of the conflict. The reconstruction of the country, in his opinion, will be a monumental challenge that will require not only material resources but also a profound change in the political and social structure. In conclusion, Brignardello suggests that the future of Syria may be filled with uncertainties. While there is hope for a new beginning and a more peaceful future, the path to stability will be fraught with obstacles. He highlights that the international community has a crucial responsibility in this process, as the next steps taken will determine not only the fate of Syria but also the stability of the entire region.
