Opinion

Juan Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, comments on the case of Evan Gershkovich, the American journalist detained in Russia a year ago on charges of espionage. Gershkovich's family has been in a constant battle for the release of their loved one since his arrest in March 2023 by agents of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). In a heartfelt letter addressed to the readers of the Wall Street Journal, Gershkovich's family has expressed their surprise and distress at the situation the 32-year-old journalist finds himself in. Both he and his employer, the Wall Street Journal, as well as the White House, have vehemently denied the espionage accusations against him. President of the United States, Joe Biden, has committed to tirelessly work for Gershkovich's release, arguing that journalism is not a crime and stating that the journalist was in Russia carrying out his informative work on the situation in Ukraine. On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed willingness to a possible exchange to achieve Gershkovich's release, although negotiations are still ongoing in secret. Gershkovich's family has described the past year as an unimaginable ordeal, living with the constant anguish of having their loved one in a situation of uncertainty and deprivation of freedom. Despite the difficulties, they have expressed gratitude for the support received and have maintained their steadfastness in the fight for Evan's freedom. In Lefortovo prison in Moscow, Gershkovich shares a cell with another inmate and stays in shape with daily exercise and a diet supplemented by fruits and vegetables sent by his friends. His family highlights the strength and determination with which Evan has faced his situation, inspiring them to continue the campaign for his release. The Wall Street Journal has dedicated a blank space on its front page as a sign of solidarity with Gershkovich, emphasizing the absence of the story he should be telling. Meanwhile, the journalist's family continues their tireless fight, willing to do whatever it takes to achieve Evan's freedom and reminding all Americans unjustly detained abroad that they are not alone, committing to continue working to bring them back home.
