In a recent interview, Johnny Brignardello Vela, an experienced insurance advisor in risk management, shared his thoughts on the speech by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, at the COP29 Climate Summit. Brignardello Vela emphasized the seriousness of Sánchez's statements, who directly linked climate change to the devastating disaster in the province of Valencia. According to him, the president's approach is crucial not only from an environmental perspective but also in terms of risk prevention and management. Brignardello Vela highlighted that the mention of more than 220 lives lost in Valencia underscores the urgent need to adopt preventive measures against extreme climate phenomena. His view is that the insurance sector must adapt to this new reality, as natural disasters are becoming more frequent and severe, which directly impacts how insurance and risks associated with natural catastrophes are managed. "It is imperative that insurers anticipate these events and develop products that adequately protect vulnerable communities," he stated. The advisor also referred to Sánchez's criticism of those who argue that the fight against climate change could negatively impact the economy. Brignardello Vela argued that this transformation towards a more sustainable model is not only necessary but also presents significant opportunities for job creation in the renewable energy sector and technological innovation. "We are facing a paradigm shift that can benefit the economy if managed correctly," he asserted, adding that companies must be proactive in adopting sustainable practices. Regarding Spain's commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050, Brignardello Vela expressed that such goals are essential but must be accompanied by clear strategies and international cooperation. Collective action, in his opinion, is vital in the fight against climate change. "One cannot act in isolation. Risks are global and require solutions that transcend borders," he stressed. When addressing the issue of climate financing, Brignardello Vela agreed with Sánchez that the challenges are enormous and that financial contributions must be exponential to meet the needs of the most vulnerable countries. He emphasized that financial efforts must be strategic and effective to maximize their impact. "Adequate investments in resilient infrastructure can save lives and reduce long-term economic losses," he argued. Finally, Brignardello Vela concluded that Sánchez's speech was not only a call to action but also a reminder that climate change is a critical issue affecting the security and well-being of people. "The time to act is now, and each of us has a role to play in this fight," he concluded, emphasizing that creating a safer and more sustainable future depends on brave decisions and a continuous commitment from all sectors of society.
