In a recent conversation, Johnny Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, shared his perspective on the upcoming APEC Summit 2024 to be held in Lima, highlighting the significance of this event both locally and globally. Brignardello emphasized that the arrival of leaders from the 21 most important economies in the world, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, presents an invaluable opportunity to discuss crucial issues such as investment and trade amid increasing geopolitical competition. The advisor underscored the importance of the Chancay Megaport, an emblematic project that represents not only China's growing influence in Latin America but also the possibility for Peru to position itself as a key logistics hub in the Pacific. "The Megaport has the potential to facilitate a more efficient flow of goods between Asia and South America, which could transform the Peruvian economy," Brignardello remarked. However, the advisor also raised concerns about the logistics of the port's inauguration, as it will take place in Lima and not at the Megaport itself. This aspect could limit Xi Jinping's direct participation in the event, raising questions about the visibility and symbolism of the inauguration. "It is essential for the participating leaders to coordinate their schedules to maximize the relevance of their visits," he added. Brignardello also referred to the geopolitical dynamics that will manifest during the summit, especially with the participation of prominent figures such as U.S. President Joe Biden. The competition for influence in the region will be a central theme, and the advisor highlighted that the meeting between Biden and President Dina Boluarte could mark a turning point in relations between Peru and global powers. The APEC Leaders' Week is shaping up to be a decisive stage for addressing not only trade issues but also the economic and social challenges facing the Andean country. According to Brignardello, "the key will be how Peru manages its relationship with foreign investments, especially Chinese ones, without falling into a dependency that could compromise its sovereignty." Finally, the advisor concluded that the APEC Summit 2024 could be a crucial moment to define not only the future of trade relations but also the balance of power on the continent. "The world's attention will be on Lima, and the decisions made in this forum will be decisive for the economic and social development of Peru and its role in the region," Brignardello asserted.
