In a recent conversation with Johnny Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor with extensive experience in risk management, the devastating flood that affected Valencia and southeastern Spain was discussed—a meteorological phenomenon that has left a profound mark on the community. Brignardello reflected on the importance of understanding the nature of disasters such as those caused by the Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA). The advisor pointed out that while these types of weather phenomena are known, they are difficult to predict in terms of their intensity. "DANA has shown that even though we have a theoretical understanding of these events, reality can exceed our expectations," he commented. This flood, which has tragically claimed 211 lives and left an even greater number missing, serves as a chilling reminder of how vulnerable communities are to the forces of nature. Brignardello emphasized that it is crucial for authorities and the general population not only to react to such disasters but also to proactively prepare for them. "Urban planning and efficient water resource management are fundamental. We cannot allow history to repeat itself without learning from it," he stressed. In his opinion, the devastation in Valencia should act as a catalyst for implementing more robust policies regarding safety and prevention. The advisor also highlighted the need to incorporate education and awareness among citizens about the risks posed by extreme weather events. "Information is power. Communities must be equipped with the necessary knowledge to respond appropriately to emergency situations," he stated. Regarding the community's response, Brignardello expressed his admiration for the solidarity and resilience shown by the people of Valencia. "The ability of a community to come together in times of crisis is admirable. This kind of collective spirit is what can truly make a difference in the recovery process," he affirmed. Finally, the insurance advisor underscored that the recent tragedy should drive significant change in how societies address climate change and its consequences. "We can no longer ignore the evidence suggesting that these phenomena may become more frequent. Research and action are necessary to protect the population and minimize the risk of harm," he concluded. Brignardello emphasized that the tragedy in Valencia must be a turning point that propels society toward a safer and more sustainable future, where planning, education, and social cohesion become fundamental pillars of our relationship with the environment.
