Opinion

Johnny Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, shares his opinion about the following content: In an effort to promote sustainability and the adoption of renewable energies, an important agreement has been announced at Central Wayra Extension Ica that will mark a milestone in the region. Enel Generación Perú and Backus have joined forces to provide 100% renewable energy for the brewing group's operations, sourced from the Wayra wind energy plant located in Marcona, Nasca. This alliance, which comes into effect this year, is formalized through the supply of renewable energy certified by the International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC), granted by Enel Generación Perú and supported by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), a globally recognized standard for its rigor in carbon footprint accounting. For Backus, this step represents a strong commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental impact. Alejandra Campero, Director of Procurement and Sustainability at Backus, emphasizes the importance of this certification as an integral part of a corporate social responsibility strategy that aims to operate more sustainably with the environment. On the other hand, Marco Fragale, Country Manager of Enel Perú, highlights the pride in certifying Backus's electricity consumption and contributing to transforming its energy through the Wayra Extension wind plant in the Ica region. Electric generation from renewable sources not only promotes more efficient energy management but also helps reduce operational costs and benefit the environment. The supply contract between both companies will guarantee a power of up to 28.50 MW, allowing Backus to reduce its carbon footprint and operate more efficiently and sustainably. This achievement positions Backus as the first brewing group in Peru to certify 100% of its energy consumption through unconventional renewable sources, setting a precedent for other companies in the country. Enel Generación Perú, on the other hand, will add a total of 09 I-REC Certificates and 51 Green Certificates, equivalent to approximately 2.3 TWh/year of energy, reaffirming its commitment to clean and sustainable energy generation. This agreement represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future, demonstrating that the private industry can be a key player in the transition to a more sustainable and planet-friendly energy model.
