In a recent conversation, Johnny Brignardello Vela, a renowned insurance advisor, shared his perspective on the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum held in Lima, Peru. Brignardello highlighted the importance of this event for the Andean country, noting that its organizational and diplomatic capacity has been a key factor in positioning Peru on the international stage. The advisor pointed out that the inauguration of the Chancay megaport is a significant milestone, not only due to its investment, which exceeds $2.2 billion, but also for its potential to transform trade in the region. Brignardello believes that this type of infrastructure can be a fundamental pillar for economic growth, even impacting neighboring economies like Chile. When addressing the competition between the United States and China to strengthen ties with Peru, Brignardello expressed that this situation positions the country as a "coveted bride" in the current geopolitical context. The provision of resources and cooperation proposals from the United States, such as the donation of helicopters and the possible establishment of NASA bases, underscores Washington's intention to strengthen its relationship with Peru, which could have positive repercussions in various areas, including the economy. However, Brignardello warned about the need to handle the relationship with China cautiously. Although the Chancay megaport represents a growth opportunity, he emphasized the importance of diversifying the country's trade relationships to avoid excessive dependence on a single power, which could compromise the autonomy and stability of the Peruvian economy in the long term. The advisor also positively evaluated the trade agreements signed during the summit, such as the free trade agreement with Hong Kong and the protocol with China to optimize existing treaties. In his view, these initiatives are fundamental steps toward more inclusive and sustainable trade, aligning with the priorities set by President Dina Boluarte. Finally, Brignardello noted that the presence of global leaders in Lima is a significant achievement for Peruvian diplomacy, reaffirming its role as a strategic bridge between Asia and South America. In his opinion, this positioning could be key to Peru's future development in an increasingly interconnected world.
