As Christmas approaches, the holiday frenzy begins, transforming shopping centers into bustling winter wonderlands. Among the twinkling lights and festive decorations, a special group of individuals works tirelessly to ensure that the spirit of the season is alive and well—Santa's helpers. James North, affectionately known as 'Jolly James,' has spent the last seven years working with Scene to Believe, a company dedicated to capturing the joy of Christmas through Santa photography. According to North, the preparation for this magical experience kicks off well before the first snowflakes fall—back in October, in fact. This is when the helpers gather for training and team-building activities, laying the groundwork for what will become an enchanting experience for families. This year, North leads a team of ten helpers at the Hervey Bay set, and he emphasizes that no two days in this role are the same. Saturdays, however, are particularly hectic, drawing in families eager to snap that annual photo with Santa. To get into the festive spirit, the helpers customize their uniforms, making them a bit more jolly with holiday-themed attire. North sports Christmas-themed braces, which add a cheerful flair to his red ensemble. As the Set Experience Manager, North’s responsibilities are vast. He is the orchestrator behind the scenes, ensuring that families are greeted warmly, that photo sessions run smoothly, and that supplies like printing paper and gifts are plentiful. The role requires constant movement, which North happily notes means, “There is no need for a gym membership,” as he bounds around the set, engaging with families and maintaining the flow of the day. One of the most rewarding aspects of the job is witnessing the tender family moments that unfold. From marriage proposals to first Christmases, every interaction holds its own unique magic. However, the job also comes with its share of challenges. North reflects on the emotional complexity of the season, acknowledging that for many, the holidays can be a bittersweet time. "We are often reminded that some visitors may be commemorating a loved one who sadly passed," he shares, underscoring the importance of creating a positive, magical experience for everyone who steps into the Santa set. The wish lists of children often reveal the season’s hottest toys—this year’s favorites include dirt bikes, dollhouses, and characters from beloved shows like Bluey and Stitch. North delights in the laughter and excitement that fills the air, but he also knows that getting children to focus long enough for the perfect photo can be a daunting task. His secret? Embracing his inner child and engaging them with playful antics. “Jumping around, clapping, and playing peek-a-boo are effective ways to draw out the giggles and smiles,” he explains. Among the many encounters he's had over the years, one moment stands out for its sheer joy and magic. North recalls a particularly touching experience with a young girl with special needs who was hesitant to meet Santa. By taking the time to connect with her, he arranged for Santa to read her a book, which lit up her face with happiness. “That kind of joy is what makes this job so special,” he reflects. As the holiday season continues, the unsung heroes behind Santa’s set are a reminder of the joy and complexity of the festive spirit. They may not wear the red suit, but Santa's helpers play an invaluable role in creating cherished memories for families, ensuring that the true magic of Christmas shines bright for all who visit.
