A local teenager has captured the hearts of railway enthusiasts and judges alike with his impressive model railway layout, winning a prestigious award at the Renfrewshire Model Railway Club's annual exhibition. Fifteen-year-old Luca Jaconelli, a resident of Dumbarton and member of the Helensburgh and District Model Railway Club, showcased his oo-gauge micro layout named Dumbarton TMD (Traction Maintenance Depot) at the event held on December 7 and 8, where more than 1,000 visitors gathered to admire various displays. Luca's triumph was marked by his receipt of the coveted Best in Show award, determined by votes from fellow exhibitors. Remarkably, he only began constructing his layout in February of this year, which adds to the significance of his achievement. Mark Davies, the chairman of the Renfrewshire Model Railway Club and the exhibition manager for the Paisley Model Railway Show, spoke of Luca's journey. Having been introduced to the hobby by his parents, Luca's enthusiasm led him to join his local model railway club, where he found encouragement and support. "Luca's story is a testament to the spirit of our community," Davies said. "He has so much enthusiasm for the hobby, it's fantastic. It's infectious actually." This sentiment was echoed by the many attendees who were keen to witness the creative talents on display. The event featured an impressive array of layouts, with 37 model displays from various groups and individuals across the UK. Visitors marveled at the diversity, which included layouts ranging from n-gauge to o-gauge. The event also served as a marketplace, with traders showcasing their goods, further enriching the experience for model railway enthusiasts of all ages. While Luca’s achievement was a highlight, the show also saw various awards presented. The Renfrewshire Quaich for overall Best in Show was awarded to Wellpark by the Scottish Diesel and Electric Group (SDEG), while the Rootes Trophy was claimed by Brian Thompson of the Greenock and District Model Railway Club for his oo-gauge depiction of Kilbowie train station in the 1960s. Mark Davies expressed gratitude to all attendees, emphasizing the success of the weekend's event. The club, established in the 1980s and boasting nearly 50 members ranging from teenagers to seniors, continues to foster a love for model railways, offering a welcoming space for both newcomers and seasoned hobbyists. Mark, now in his forties, reminisces about his own childhood experiences at these shows, and his commitment to ensuring the club remains a cherished part of the Renfrewshire calendar. Looking forward, the Renfrewshire Model Railway Club is gearing up for an even bigger event next year—the Scottish Festival of Railway Modelling, scheduled for June 14 and 15 at Braehead Arena. This new venture promises to be a family-friendly occasion, featuring around 40 to 45 layouts alongside 25 trade stands and demonstrators. For those interested in exploring the world of model railways, the club eagerly invites newcomers to join them. Regular meetings occur on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights at their base in Elderslie. Mark encourages anyone from beginners to experienced hobbyists to come and learn, collaborate, and share in the joy that model railroading brings. "We have the skillset for people who are just learning for the first time, building their first train set right the way through to people who have been doing it for 50 years or more," he said.
